Tinnitus

Tinnitus is defined as the perception of ringing, hissing or other sound in the ears or head when no external sound is present.  For some people, it may be a minor annoyance but for others it is a life altering problem. It is often described as ringing, roaring, buzzing, chirping, and crickets.

Over 44 million people in the United States have this problem and at least 10 million of those have significant suffering.  Almost one third of all senior citizens have some degree of this condition.  Medical doctors generally tell patients that this is something they must live with. However, we at Windsong Therapy and Wellness have seen many people relieved of this condition.

There can be many causes of tinnitus.  The most common causes are hearing loss, exposure to loud noises, broken or damaged hairs on the auditory cells, allergies, tumors, or problems in the heart or blood vessels.  It may be a side effect of medication, begin after an illness or injury, or be from an undetermined cause.  The only therapy usually recommended for tinnitus is retraining, which is attempts to train the patient so he is no longer aware of the noise.

One cause that usually remains unexplored is pressure or restrictions on the delicate structure of the ear. Non-invasive manual therapies such as those used at Windsong Therapy and Wellness may relieve restrictions and return the delicate bones and canals of the ear to their proper positions.  This may alleviate the symptoms of this condition.
